Fixes for better play
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:45 »
So it seems when I play online for extended periods of time there are certain habits I develop over the weeks and months of play that really are detramental to my game. Two of these seem to be simple fundementals. And one change was something that in 26 years of poker play I just never knew about or saw the logic in. Am I willing to say what they are in this blog? Not a chance. LOL ! I'm not giving anyone any fuel to beat me. But what I wanted to discuss is what I did to fix these problem areas.
First of all I took a step back and made a plan for getting help. So many times in life and poker its hard to see our own faults or weaknesses. So I needed to ask for help. We should never ever let our Pride stand in the way. I felt also it was imperitive for me to get my help from someone I really trusted to be Honest and Objective with me. I first needed to ask if there were character traits that were standing in my way from making changes that will stick. For that I asked my Wife and Brother. They of course were completely honest with me. LOL ! And we narrowed it down to one thing that I am working to keep in check. Then I went to someone in my home game who is a High Stacks player on PS. He looked at my hand history and stat data. And we discussed two fundementals that over a period of time seem to fade. Ok we make that fix. Next I went to a player I play with regularly at the Casino and we sat over lunch with one of the dealers and looked at the data and sure enough we came to the same conclusions. I must say this player was very honest with me in telling how he likes to exploit the weaknesses in my game. I was really happy to have his input, not many would be willing to do this as we play for pots against each other so often. Now I was on RBs and was surfing blogs. One caught my attention. And the point was simple. Instead of complaining about other players quality of play the smart thing might be to Do the FT poker academy to improve our own play. I have never gone through the Academy and felt this might humble me enough to see my faults and improve my game. My thinking use to be " The academy is for beginners and Im no beginner." That type of thinking in its self hurts my game. So I made an ajustment in my brain. Part of the skill building in the Academy is to play penny poker,so I started there and am continueing that education. I also looked at all the video tutoring and found one point in PLO play that I never knew and my Plo stats are up already.

I believe I am seeing results already. Although we will need to see if this holds up over the Test Of Time.
I finished 4th in the RBs top 50 money winners game. Picked up a few points in the Shazam poker league. And yesterday went 3 for 3 In The Money in Rb tourneys in 3 different disaplines. Holdem/PLO/and Stud. I'm looking for this trend to continue.
My final point is this. I am never to good to ask for help. Poker is a continuing education. The academy is an excellent tool for players of all skill levels.

Congrats on finding the Academy and putting all of that free knowledge to use. Not only is the Academy not just for beginners, I say most of the material they have up there is beyond beginner's level. This doesn't mean beginners shouldn't watch as much of it as they desire and can find full value in it... just that the information and concepts found there have a very wide range. When you add the challenges, sessions with real pros playing mostly high-stakes games (at least much higher than 99% of us are playing) and podcasts where the pros discuss their own poker insights and experiences... the FTP Academy really has a lot of players of all skill levels. They also are producing more in-depth and intense challenges all the time, so keep a constant eye on the Academy. Take advantage of the free knowledge, free bonuses and keep up the good work and good luck at the tables!
