The Average Podsters Bankroll(how to maintain and grow it)
« on: May 04, 2010, 10:08 » Hello Podsters,
I feel this is a fair assumption that most of us when we make a deposit its usually between $50.00 and $100.00. Obviously we don't wanna lose our $50.00 or $100.00 deposit. I feel I have a safe way to approach playing on a limited bankroll. I am going to share my personal experiences and advice.
Treat it as an Investment
That's basically what it is an investment in yourself and your abilities as a player. I mean you have to be honest with yourself if you feel the investment in yourself is good then deposit. If you aren't really good there is first nothing wrong with admitting it because its the only way you can correct mistakes and become a better player.
Block out Temptation
I know this is something I had to do personally. I mean seeing those big 4 to 10K 1st prizes often times got me to play tournaments that I couldn't really afford. How did I combat this by using the tournament filter. This feature really makes it possible for us to control what we play. For me I blocked out all tournaments over 2 dollars and did the same for SNGs.
Look at your strengths, and Adjust your BR Accordingly
We as players have things we do well, and some things we need to work on. I study my own game and found that I'm a far better 6 max player than most and that I could study 9 or 10 handed tournament play more. What I mean by adjust your BR is simply apply your money to your strong games. IF you rock the heads up games play those till you build it.
Look at Your Weaknesses
Just as you adjust to your strengths avoid playing games that you are weak at. Granted playing them is the best way to learn you can't really afford to pay the price for the lesson so to speak. Your BR is limited You can't really afford to dump buy ins in games that you suck at. That's why I don't play anything but Hold em NL and Omaha PL right now. I know I suck at razz, stud and other games and need to learn them, but I'll learn them when the price becomes less important to my overall goal in poker and that is to make money.
Use Satellites as a way to get money to take shots
This is actually something I feel we all do, but I feel probably do it incorrectly. Here is a personal experience I can use I played in a $2.20 6 Max Triple shootout Tournament top two made it to the Sunday Million. I had a BR of $325 and some change. Which means I had already been grinding and being successful because I only deposited $50.00. I won my way into the Sunday Million, however I didn't play the Sunday Million. I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that I could use this money to take shots at buy ins I couldn't quite afford to play yet. Which for me ended up being $ 10 dollar tournaments. I figured I would use the $215 to play $10 dollar tournaments giving me 21 buy ins to take shots. While all at the same time keeping my BR intact so even if my venture outside my BR failed I still stay afloat and alive in the tournament poker. I actually hit a score for $1,500.00. That's not the point really though the point is I allowed myself to take shots all on really $2.20.
Don't Play if you don't want to
I feel some of us play sometimes just because we really don't have the passion or determination we need to apply our skills correctly. This bluntly pisses away your BR and will leave you feeling annoyed angry and upset. So just do something else I don't care what you do play video games, chill with friends, watch porn do whatever lol. Just don't play poker. I can promise you the poker games will be there when you come back.
Reward Yourself by Setting Milestone Cashout marks
You have to be giving yourself something for Sticking to your BR Guidelines. Whats the best reward you can get? Personally for me its money we all like money so set cashout milestones. Mine was at $2,000.00 you can go smaller. I took $1,500.00 out for myself. $500.00 was plenty for what I wanted to do. You can even set smaller ones such as to $500.00 when you reach that. You could take out $150.00 or whatever allows you to keep playing at the stake you feel comfortable at.
Conclusion
Poker is suppose to be fun and profitable. Managing your BR is just as important as the games you play. We all love playing because of many reasons, but our goal is to make money. This blog doesn't cover giving advice as what stakes to play because there is tons of great blogs, articles, and other things that give great advice on that. This is just for ways to stay within your BR, and ways to enjoy the success that comes with sticking to your BR management. Have a good day folks.
